Reduced maintenance needs and durability are Empire’s hallmarks. Empire zoysia was originally developed in Brazil, and thrives in both harsh tropical climates as well as more temperate regions as far north as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Empire zoysia is one of the few grasses rated to perform well in all zones, and it can thrive in varying soils and climatic conditions.
Empire is a medium bladed zoysia with leaf widths of 5-7 mm. It produces a dense tight turf that is very competitive with weeds. For residential uses, it can be mowed at 1″ to 2″ with a rotary mower. Golf courses using reel mowers have maintained excellent turf quality at 1/2″ to 1″ mowing heights.
The Empire zoysia fields at Oakwood Sod Farm are inspected by Maryland Department of Agriculture and Sod Solutions, the company that developed and licenses its production.
