• When is the best/worst time to install sod?

Tall Fescue sod can be installed anytime the ground is not frozen. Fall and winter are the best times because fescue is a cool season grass and roots readily in cool temperatures. Mid-June through August is the least ideal time to install tall fescue because of the stress caused by high temperatures. Bermudagrass and zoysia thrive on heat and do better when installed during warm weather.

• How much sod do I need?

Our sod is sold by the square foot so you need to measure the area to be sodded. Multiply the length of the area by the width if it is rectangular or nearly so. Odd shapes can be measured by dividing the area into smaller sections and adding the totals.

• After laying the sod, when should I start mowing?

Wait until the sod has rooted before mowing. If you are unsure, tug on the corner of one of the pieces to see if it has rooted. When you do mow, remember to remove no more than one third of the blade with each mowing.

• How frequently should I water my established tall fescue lawn?

Water the lawn only when the grass needs water. Use the "footprint" test to see if it needs water. If you step on the grass and the outline of your footprint remains, the grass needs water.

• I have brown patches in my tall fescue. What is it?

If the weather is hot and humid, especially at night, it is likely a fungus problem called "brown patch". The fungus is released from overwintering spores when the nighttime temperatures remain above 59 degrees and the relative humidity is high. The fungicide most commonly used by homeowners to control brown patch is Daconil 2787. Apply according to label directions. To help prevent brown patch, do not over water, water at night, leave clumps of clippings on the lawn or over fertilize.
